Coast Guard Refers Deadly Miami Sailboat Crash to Justice Department

In a tragic incident that occurred last July, the U.S. Coast Guard has announced that it has referred its investigation into a sailboat crash near Miami Beach to the Department of Justice for potential criminal prosecution. The collision, which took place on July 28th, resulted in the deaths of three young girls - 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, 13-year-old Erin Ko Han, and 10-year-old Ari Buchman - who were participating in a summer sailing camp. Two other individuals were also injured in the crash.

The Coast Guard's investigation has led them to cite possible violations of the federal seaman's manslaughter statute against parties connected to the towing company operating the uninspected vessel, known as the "Wood Chuck," which was involved in the collision. "After conducting a thorough marine casualty investigation, we've referred this case to [the] Department of Justice for criminal investigation to ensure full accountability and help deter similar cases in the future," said Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander Capt. Frank J. Florio.

The tragic incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. on July 28th, when the barge being pushed by the towing vessel struck and dragged the small sailboat carrying the children underwater. Witnesses, including other young sailors from the camp, described the horrific moment of impact, with one stating, "The crane just completely destroyed the boat. The boat just went under."
