Joseph Savarino, the grandson of legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) after a fatal collision. The tragic incident occurred around 9 PM on Saturday in Durham, North Carolina.
Officials reported that Savarino's Ford Explorer struck a 15-year-old boy who was riding his bicycle in front of the vehicle. The teenager tragically died at the scene from his injuries.
According to court documents, Savarino admitted to consuming alcohol earlier that evening. At 12:45 AM, he registered a .11 on a breathalyzer test, surpassing the legal limit of .08.
Savarino was subsequently booked into jail, and his bail was set at $100,000 on Monday. As a consequence of the incident, he surrendered his driver's license for a minimum of 30 days. He is scheduled to appear in court in one month.
This event brings to mind a prior DWI arrest involving Savarino's brother, Michael, in 2021. That incident also saw Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero charged with aiding and abetting DWI.
