Clancy, 36, has admitted to strangling her children, Cora, Dawson, and Callan, on January 24, 2023, in their Duxbury home. Her defense attorney contends that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time. If convicted of first-degree murder, she faces a life sentence without parole. An alternative verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity could lead to commitment to a state psychiatric hospital.
Prosecutors argue that Clancy understood the wrongfulness of her actions, believing she killed her children as part of a plan to end her own life and prevent them from suffering without her. The trial has involved over 80 witnesses and more than 300 exhibits. If a mistrial is declared, the decision to retry the case will fall to the prosecution.
