Heartless attackers have targeted Christmas lights in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, which were dedicated to individuals who have passed away. The Spirit of Mexborough community group organized the display, with residents paying £20 for each set of lights to honor their loved ones. Sadly, just four days after their activation, between 15 and 20 sets of lights were vandalized across three locations.
Organizers described the act as "spiteful" and a display of "disrespect and a lack of empathy," noting that the wires were cut and battery boxes stolen. The community shared poignant handwritten messages attached to the lights, making the damage even more upsetting for those grieving. One resident expressed devastation, stating the lights were a comfort to her father.
South Yorkshire Police have initiated an investigation into the criminal damage and have released CCTV images of two men they believe can assist with their inquiries. The men are described as white, around 20 years old, of slim build, and approximately 5ft 8in tall. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to help identify those responsible for this disheartening act.
