In the Chilika lake area, wildlife personnel have apprehended a suspect, Sheikh Mustak from Puri district, with two dead birds and poaching equipment. The birds, identified as little egret and cattle egret, are listed under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, indicating their protected status.
The arrest occurred during routine patrolling, leading to the recovery of the carcasses from the suspect's possession, along with a country-made gun and bullets. This incident follows a previous arrest on November 18, where 44 dead birds were found in the Tangi range.
To combat poaching, the forest department has established 21 temporary anti-poaching camps across the Chilika lake, which will remain active until the end of March. These measures aim to safeguard the thousands of migratory birds that arrive each winter from Eurasia and Russia to escape the cold.
