A 5-year-old girl, who is a United States citizen, was found safe in Mexico nearly three weeks after an Amber Alert was issued for her disappearance from Los Angeles. Her father, 40-year-old Ruben Fregoso, was apprehended over the weekend in Mexico.
Authorities allege Fregoso fled across the border after killing his 36-year-old girlfriend and abducting their daughter. The child was found safe upon Fregoso's arrest and is currently in the custody of Mexican officials. The United States Embassy will facilitate her return to her family.
Fregoso faces charges of murder and child abuse. He is accused of killing Marysol Garcia, the child's mother, who was found dead in her West Adams home on Monday, May 25. Fregoso faces 25 years to life in state prison if convicted.
The extradition process for Fregoso is set to begin. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office highlighted the severity of the violence and vowed to pursue justice for both the victim and the child.
