Child Assaulted at UC Berkeley Summer Camp, Staffer Held

A 27-year-old man, identified as a summer camp staff member, was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a child under 14. The incident reportedly took place overnight Saturday inside a UC Berkeley residence hall during an overnight summer camp program. UC Berkeley Police were first alerted to what was initially described as an attempted sexual assault.

Following their investigation, authorities confirmed a completed sexual assault had occurred. The suspect, from Vallejo, was booked into Santa Rita Jail on $425,000 bail and is slated for arraignment on Wednesday. Police have stated that immediate safety measures and support services were provided to the child victim.

The incident has prompted concerns within the campus community regarding the safety of children attending programs on university grounds. A university spokesperson confirmed the camp was not operated by UC Berkeley, though the responsible organization remains unidentified.
