Summary

- Lawsuit alleges Chicago PD ignored Baker's history of misconduct.
- Baker allegedly fled scene, failed to provide aid to Rivera.

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the Chicago Police Department following the fatal shooting of Officer Krystal Rivera by her partner, Carlos Baker. The lawsuit alleges that the department ignored clear warning signs and Baker's history of violent misconduct, including previous allegations of threatening an ex-girlfriend with a gun.
Rivera was killed on June 5 while attempting to apprehend an armed suspect. According to the complaint, Baker fired his weapon during a foot chase, striking Rivera in the back. The suit further claims Baker fled the scene and failed to provide any medical assistance to Rivera, who reportedly radioed in her own shooting.
Rivera's family attorney stated that Baker had multiple misconduct complaints and should never have remained on the force. The lawsuit also accuses the department of filing misleading reports about the incident. Prosecutors had previously declined to prosecute Baker, but the family hopes the lawsuit will prompt a reconsideration.
