In Chengalpet district, police apprehended a second suspect on Wednesday in connection with the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl. The assault occurred near Athivakkam lake after the victim and her companions were chased by two men on a motorcycle. The victim's group fell from their vehicle, and the perpetrators subsequently targeted the 14-year-old.
She managed to reach a road by dawn and received help from villagers, leading to her hospitalization and the alerting of authorities. A special team initiated an investigation, registering a case under the Pocso Act based on the victim's parents' complaint.
Investigators identified and arrested 'Kakka' Balaji, a 26-year-old history-sheeter with extensive criminal records, on Tuesday. His associate, Dhamodhara Perumal, also 26, was subsequently arrested based on Balaji's confession. The two men had met while previously incarcerated.
Analysis of mobile tower data and CCTV footage showing the accused fleeing the scene were crucial in their apprehension. Balaji has a history of offenses including attempted murder, theft, and robbery.
