Since January 2020, Chandigarh police have made significant strides against drug networks, initiating 732 cases under the NDPS Act and apprehending 835 individuals involved in smuggling. The crackdown has extended to financial assets, with Rs 15 crore worth of properties frozen this year alone to cripple cartel operations.
The city's underworld has been targeted across various substances, including heroin, charas, opium, and poppy husk. Heroin, in particular, remains a lucrative commodity, with peddlers reportedly making substantial profits by selling it at Rs 3,500 per gram after purchasing it for Rs 2,000.
In a novel move, the crime branch has invoked the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in NDPS Act, proposing detentions for habitual offenders. Police attribute the persistent drug trade to easy money, unemployment, and widespread addiction among the populace.
