Sari Snare: Chain Snatchers Use New Trick on Motorcyclists
23 Aug
Summary
- Thieves now warn women on bikes their sari might get trapped.
- A 45-gram gold mangalsutra worth Rs 3 lakh was snatched.
- Three suspects arrested after a chase and villager intervention.

Chain-snatchers have devised a new modus operandi, preying on women traveling on motorcycles. The thieves approach riders, fabricating a warning that their sari might become entangled in the vehicle's wheel, potentially causing an accident. This tactic is used to halt the bike, after which they forcibly snatch gold chains.
An incident on August 18th in Davanagere district saw three men on a motorbike intercept a couple. They falsely alerted the woman about her sari's proximity to the wheel, then snatched her 45-gram mangalsutra. The husband's pursuit and the subsequent alert to villagers led to the capture of one suspect.
Police investigations, aided by information from the first arrested individual, resulted in the apprehension of the remaining two accused. All three suspects hail from Holalkere in Chitradurga district, with one employed locally. The valuable 45-gram gold mangalsutra, estimated to be worth Rs 3 lakh, was successfully recovered.
