Daughter Calls 911 on Mother Amidst Cat Infestation

Olena Horbatko, a 54-year-old mother of two from Long Island, was arrested and is facing serious charges due to the deplorable conditions found in her home. The situation escalated when her 18-year-old daughter reportedly contacted 911 to report the extensive cat infestation and the resulting squalor.

Authorities and animal rescue workers described a shocking scene within the residence on St. Andrews Lane. Responders, wearing hazmat suits, removed dozens of cats from various parts of the house. They discovered multiple floors covered in cat waste, with overflowing litter boxes, indicating severe neglect. Some of the cats exhibited symptoms of eye infections and respiratory diseases, requiring medical treatment.

Neighbors had reportedly complained about the stench and stray cats for years. Horbatko's home has now been condemned, and she informed the court she has no alternative housing. Animal welfare advocates hope this case encourages others to report suspected animal abuse.
