A delivery driver has avoided immediate prison after admitting to taking a family's cat, Nora, from her garden in Elland, West Yorkshire, in January. Catalin Stancu, 41, was handed an eight-week prison term, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay £500 in compensation.
Mr. Stancu told police he had not intended to steal the cat and was unsure if she had an owner, despite her collar. The cat's family experienced three distressing days without Nora, who requires medication. After footage of her being taken was posted online, it went viral, prompting Mr. Stancu to contact the family to arrange Nora's return.
The offense, taking a cat, was highlighted as a new legal distinction in 2024, recognizing pets as more than mere objects. Stancu, who has prior dishonesty offenses, expressed remorse and apologized to the family, noting negative reactions in his home country of Romania. Nora has since been returned, but the family has invested in a secure outdoor area due to ongoing fears.
Stancu was also ordered to complete 15 rehabilitation activity days and a three-month curfew. The family stated that while the sentence cannot undo their distress, they appreciate the court's recognition of the seriousness of the act and accept his apology, emphasizing that animals are cherished family members.
