Cartel Chief Arrested in Influencer's Murder

Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, a significant figure in a Mexican drug cartel, was apprehended last week for his alleged role in the death of influencer Valeria Marquez. Marquez, who was romantically involved with Ayala's son, Francisco, was fatally shot in May 2025. The violent incident was captured on video as two men entered her beauty salon, with one asking her name before firing. Ayala is also suspected of masterminding the assassination of Mayor Carlos Manzo of Uruapan.

Security Minister Omar García Harfuch stated that Ayala's criminal cell allegedly carried out multiple violent acts under his command, including the "tragic feminicide" of Marquez. Francisco, the victim's former partner and Ayala's son, remains at large and is believed to have instigated his father's involvement. Marquez had a substantial online presence, boasting over 100,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram.
