Comedian Carlos Mencia was arrested on Thursday, facing 12 felony charges for allegedly failing to report or pay taxes on over $8.7 million in earnings. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced the charges, stating Mencia owes more than $300,000 in state taxes.
The charges cover both personal and corporate income from 2019 to 2024. Mencia, who previously paid taxes regularly, reportedly received 78 notices from the state regarding his delinquent bills without response. He was arrested at his Los Angeles home and was being held on $250,000 bail.
If convicted, Mencia could face over 10 years in prison and be required to pay back taxes with significant interest. This case marks the first filed by the new Business Tax Fraud Unit in Los Angeles County. Mencia, born in Honduras, rose to fame in the early 2000s with his stand-up and the Comedy Central series "Mind of Mencia."
