A violent carjacking at a Toledo bus station resulted in the death of 67-year-old Donald Russell. Russell was reportedly pulled from his car and dragged for half a mile by his seatbelt by assailant Jesse Moats, 38, on February 19.
Russell was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on February 23. His extensive injuries included kidney failure, three broken ribs, black lung disease, and pneumonia. Doctors indicated that amputations of both arms, a leg, and continued life support would be necessary.
Moats, the suspect, died later the same day after crashing the stolen vehicle on a Toledo highway. He was fatally struck by a semi-truck when he attempted to flee the scene on foot.
Russell's granddaughter, Anniyah Fell, described her grandfather as a kind and talkative man. She expressed her family's desire to understand Moats' motive for the attack. Moats' mother also shared her sorrow, stating her son was a loving person and she did not understand his actions.
