A shocking armed carjacking and robbery unfolded in a busy Winter Park parking lot on Aloma Avenue just before 8 p.m., as reported on May 1, 2026. The suspect, identified as James Yawn, violently attacked a woman, dragging her by her hair and stealing her truck at gunpoint after failing to take her purse.
Following the carjacking, Yawn led authorities on an extremely aggressive, high-speed pursuit that spanned over 30 miles across Central Florida. Speeds during the chase reportedly reached nearly 130 miles per hour on I-4, with the suspect weaving through traffic and attempting to ram law enforcement vehicles.
The chase concluded near the Deltona and Orange City exits, where Yawn was apprehended. Authorities noted that Yawn appeared to be under the influence of cannabis and made bizarre claims to troopers, including identifying himself as 'Messiah' and the 'Son of Adam.'
Yawn appeared in court on Wednesday night and is facing serious charges, including armed carjacking, kidnapping with a firearm, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. He was placed on a bond exceeding $60,000 and is also charged with DUI and fleeing law enforcement. The armed carjacking charge alone carries a potential life sentence.
