Summary
- Care worker took photos of dementia patients for Snapchat.
- Offences occurred at Craigavon Area Hospital's dementia ward.
- First prosecution of its kind in Northern Ireland.

Ciara Corvan, 28, has been sentenced for offences committed while working as a healthcare assistant on a specialist dementia ward at Craigavon Area Hospital. The charges involved taking and sharing photos of vulnerable patients on Snapchat between autumn 2022 and summer 2023.
During a court hearing on Monday, Corvan was handed a two-year probation order and 100 hours of community service. Judge Patrick McGurgan stated that Corvan failed to treat patients with the required respect and dignity. The offences, which involved four dementia patients who have since died, were described as degrading and humiliating.
This case represents the first prosecution of its kind in Northern Ireland. The judge highlighted that Corvan was in a position of trust and exploited the patients' helplessness. The actions were brought to light by co-workers who reported Corvan's behaviour to management.
Victim impact statements were presented, and Corvan's defense stated she had written a letter of apology expressing deep regret. Families of the victims condemned the acts as a violation of human rights and a gross abuse of trust, emphasizing the need for accountability in care settings.
