Care Worker Turned Burglar Jailed For Attacking Vulnerable

Ediongseyene Essien, a former care worker in Liverpool, has been sentenced to eight years imprisonment for a series of offenses committed against his former patients shortly after his suspension. He used his intimate knowledge of their routines and home security, including key safe codes, to perpetrate burglaries and robberies.

Essien targeted four elderly and disabled individuals between March and May of this year. His crimes included breaking into a couple's home, kicking a blind wheelchair user, and snatching a woman's handbag. The victims have reported lasting psychological trauma, including anxiety and a loss of independence.

During his sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court, Essien pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery, four of burglary, and one of fraud. The judge highlighted the extreme vulnerability of the victims and the betrayal of trust involved. Essien's defense argued that he was at a low ebb, facing homelessness and declining mental health, and expressed his genuine remorse.

While acknowledging Essien's remorse and difficult circumstances, the court imposed a significant sentence, also noting that he will face automatic deportation after serving part of his sentence. Essien expressed regret for the impact on his family and his inability to see his young child.
