Cape May Curbs Underage Beach Access
15 Aug
Summary
- Minors under 18 must be with an adult after 8 p.m.
- Unaccompanied teens face a 10:30 p.m. curfew.
- Bags are restricted on beaches and promenade after 8 p.m.

Cape May has introduced new restrictions for minors, with the City Council unanimously approving measures requested by the police department. Individuals under 18 will now be prohibited from the beach after 8 p.m. unless accompanied by an adult. Additionally, unaccompanied minors face a public curfew between 10:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. The town is also restricting backpacks and certain bags on beaches and the promenade after 8 p.m., with exceptions for medical equipment.
These ordinances aim to prevent disruptive behavior, including underage drinking and fights, which have led to arrests. Cape May Mayor Zachary Mullock stated the goal is to avoid becoming an 'afterparty' for neighboring communities that have already enacted similar rules. This move by Cape May aligns with measures taken by other popular Jersey Shore destinations like Ocean City, Wildwood, and Seaside Heights.
