Summary
- Illegal firework sale fines increased from $750 to $3,000.
- Fines for illegal discharge of fireworks doubled to $1,000.
- New $1,000 fine for setting up fireworks in public areas.

Calgary is implementing much higher fines for illegal fireworks use and sales. As of Tuesday, the penalty for the illegal sale of fireworks has surged from $750 to $3,000. Simultaneously, fines for discharging fireworks without a permit have doubled from $500 to $1,000. Additionally, a new $1,000 fine targets individuals found carrying or setting up fireworks for use in public areas.
These enhanced penalties are part of updated bylaws aimed at improving public safety. Fire Marshal Glenn Baxter stated the changes support safe and responsible celebrations. The bylaw amendments address concerns about unauthorized sales and discharge, which administration noted remained an issue. Data indicates peak periods for illegal firework activity include Diwali, Canada Day, Stampede, and New Year's Eve, with Diwali often generating the highest volume of complaints.
To complement the stricter enforcement, city administration is also focusing on enhanced education and outreach. A coordinated operational plan involving multiple city services has been developed to improve awareness and enforcement during busy periods. This approach prioritizes safety while still enabling communities to hold celebrations.
