In the early hours of January 30, 2021, a fatal road accident on the Koratagere-Madhugiri Road was investigated by Police Inspector Fakrusab K Nadaf. Reaching the scene quickly, Nadaf discovered three stab wounds on the driver, indicating a murder rather than an accident.
The victim was identified as cab driver Nisar Ahmed through his phone's call history. Ahmed had been hired to drive a passenger, later identified as Veerendra P, from Bengaluru to Tumakuru for Rs 3,300.
CCTV footage and mobile location data tracked the vehicle and passenger. Veerendra confessed that he planned to rob and kill the driver.
Veerendra attacked Ahmed while en route, later attempting to stage the scene as an accident. He was apprehended in Chitradurga district, confessed to the murder, and led police to hidden bloodstained clothes. His motive was to obtain Rs 4 lakh by selling the car for his sister's marriage.
The Koratagere police filed a chargesheet, and Veerendra was convicted to life imprisonment on August 3, 2026. The court relied on circumstantial evidence, including digital records and witness statements, for the conviction.
