A high-speed police pursuit in Bakersfield resulted in the untimely death of a 22-year-old man. Kevin Daniel Stevens was tragically killed on Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m. while resting on a bus stop bench. Officers were attempting to apprehend Isaiah Andrade, 21, who had an outstanding warrant for gun and gang-related offenses. Andrade was reportedly in a vehicle driven by Gabriel Lopez, 20, which fled from officers at high speeds.
During the pursuit, police deployed spike strips in an effort to stop the vehicle. However, Lopez lost control of the car near Olive Drive, veering onto the sidewalk and striking Stevens. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gabriel Lopez was subsequently arrested and booked into the Lerdo Justice Facility on charges including second-degree murder, evading officers, and conspiracy. He is being held on $1.3 million bail. Isaiah Andrade also faces charges of evading officers, conspiracy, and firearm-related offenses.
