A 36-year-old businessman from Surat, Gujarat, recently staged an elaborate kidnapping to escape significant financial troubles. The man, identified as Jigneshbhai Laljibhai Talaviya, had incurred losses between Rs 50 lakh and Rs 60 lakh in stock market and options trading, leaving him deeply in debt. To manage this crisis, he devised a plan to deceive his family and demand a ransom.
Talaviya initiated the deception by filing a missing person report, followed by sending ransom messages from his own mobile phone. These messages demanded Rs 50 lakh and threatened dire consequences if the police became involved. Adding to the drama, he sent a video showing him seemingly held captive and tied up. However, police investigations, utilizing technical surveillance and human intelligence, revealed the video was filmed in Godhra, not the initially suspected Ujjain district.
Following this discovery, a police team located Talaviya at a hotel in Godhra. During interrogation, he confessed to staging the entire kidnapping. He admitted to sending the messages and filming the video himself as a means to extract money from his family and relatives to cover his substantial debts. The Deputy Commissioner of Police confirmed that Talaviya acted alone and has since registered a case against him for legal proceedings.
