A 56-year-old businessman from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, has died under suspicious circumstances during a business trip to Chandigarh. Deepak Mittal was discovered unconscious in his hotel room on the morning of October 22, 2026, and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The initial post-mortem examination proved inconclusive, prompting authorities to send his viscera samples for toxicological analysis. Police are investigating the possibility of alcohol poisoning, as several liquor bottles were found in Mittal's room.
Mittal, a contractor for the Punjab government, was in Chandigarh for a scheduled meeting with Markfed officials on October 23, 2026. He was involved in packaging flour and pulses and supplying ration kits, and also served as a director for a rice-exporting company.
While a woman who visited Mittal on the night of October 21, 2026, was questioned, she was cleared of suspicion. She had reportedly alerted hotel staff after Mittal felt unwell. The body has since been released to the family for cremation.
