Burnham Battles Traveller Troubles: Reputation and Finances at Stake
30 Sep, 2025
Summary
- 10 Traveller encampments in Burnham-on-Sea between June and September
- Damage to town's reputation, disruption, and financial loss
- Reports of anti-social behavior, theft, vandalism, and threats

Burnham-on-Sea has been facing a significant challenge over the summer as the town battles a growing Traveller problem. According to local councillors, the town's reputation has suffered, and it has experienced disruption and financial loss due to the influx of Traveller encampments.
In the past few months, between June and September, the town has seen a total of 10 Traveller encampments. These encampments have led to a range of issues, including reports of anti-social behavior, theft, vandalism, and even threats against local officials. Councillor Peter Clayton, who represents the Burnham-on-Sea North area, has described the situation as damaging to the town's reputation, with incidents such as the removal of number plates, laundry strung across public areas, litter, and a fire to burn plastic off cables.
Councillors have already met with the local police to address the problem and find ways to mitigate the impact on the town. Cllr. Clayton has suggested that a dedicated police officer be assigned to log and report any anti-social behavior, as he claims that some incidents go unreported because locals believe nothing will be done.
As Burnham-on-Sea continues to grapple with this challenge, the town's leaders are determined to restore its reputation and ensure that the disruption and financial losses caused by the Traveller encampments are brought under control.
