- Fraud victims were duped by fake election officials and OTP scams.
Two unemployed brothers, Vikash and Vishal Kumar, from Nawada district have been apprehended for allegedly operating a sophisticated cyber-fraud scheme that amassed crores. Their operation came to light when investigators probing a fraud complaint discovered they were building a luxurious five-storey mansion in Patna's affluent Ram Krishna Nagar area, estimated to cost between Rs 6-7 crore.
The arrests were made in their village of Manjhwe. Authorities have alerted the income tax department and the EOU to scrutinize the brothers' financial activities, as they apparently had no legal means to fund such an extravagant construction. Their father is also reportedly unemployed.
The cyber-fraud racket's modus operandi involved victims being contacted by individuals posing as election officials. The fraudsters then obtained bank details, including through OTP schemes, and used a ported mobile number to create a UPI ID for siphoning funds via ATM withdrawals in Patna. Technical evidence points to Rs 60 lakh being defrauded so far.
