Summary
- Two brothers racing home caused a fatal collision.
- A father died, his son seriously injured in the crash.
- The drivers were locum optometrists on their way home.

Two brothers, locum optometrists Abubakr and Umar Ben Yusaf, have been found guilty following a fatal collision near Welshpool in November 2024. The crash resulted in the death of Rhys Jenkins, a father of two, and serious injuries to his nine-year-old son, who was airlifted to the hospital. Abubakr Ben Yusaf, who was driving a BMW X3 that struck the Toyota Yaris head-on, was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and driving uninsured. His brother, Umar Ben Yusaf, driving behind him, was found guilty of causing death and serious injury by careless driving.
The court heard evidence that the brothers were racing each other, attempting to overtake on the road between Newtown and Welshpool. Both defendants denied the charges. Abubakr Ben Yusaf remains in custody pending sentencing on July 27th, while Umar Ben Yusaf was released on bail. The judge indicated that imprisonment is highly likely for both, given the gravity of the circumstances.
