India has put forth a proposal for a dedicated virtual working group under BRICS to tackle the escalating sophistication of narcotics trafficking. This initiative was announced during a recent meeting of anti-drug agency heads from BRICS nations in Guwahati.
Director General Anurag Garg highlighted that contemporary drug trafficking methods have transformed a localized issue into a hyper-connected global threat. The proposed group aims to facilitate regular exchanges of real-time intelligence and coordinate joint operations against evolving trafficking patterns.
The meeting agenda focused on three core areas: combating synthetic drugs and precursor diversion, enhancing intelligence sharing and operational coordination, and building institutional capacity. Garg stressed the necessity for agility and trust among law enforcement agencies to defeat transnational criminal networks effectively.
Discussions also addressed emerging threats like the exploitation of Darknet platforms, the rise of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS), and the diversion of precursor chemicals. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to maritime trafficking, emphasizing the need for a unified oceanic strategy to secure borders against bulk drug movements.
India reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, focusing on disrupting trafficking networks and financial operations. The country also champions a restorative approach for drug abuse victims, promoting harm reduction and holistic recovery to heal social fabric and secure youth futures.
