Summary

- The scammer demanded Rs 21,000 to prevent fabricated police action.
- The student recalled an advisory, realizing the caller was a fraud.
A 19-year-old NEET aspirant from Bhubaneswar's Nayapalli area demonstrated remarkable presence of mind on Thursday by foiling a cyberfraudster's attempt to extort money. The scammer impersonated the Director General of Police (DGP), Y B Khurania, by using his photograph on a messaging app.
The caller falsely accused the student of watching banned pornographic sites and threatened her with simulated torture, demanding Rs 21,000. He claimed a police team was en route to her home and threatened public humiliation.
Fortunately, the student recalled an Odisha police advisory stating that law enforcement agencies do not conduct investigations or interrogations over the phone. Recognizing the scammer's tactics, she ended the call and promptly reported the incident to the cyber police.
Cyber police commended the student for not falling prey to the deceitful pressure. The caller's number has been blocked, and efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect. Police are urging the public to remain vigilant against such impersonation schemes, reinforcing that official investigations and demands for money do not occur via phone calls.
