27 May
Summary
- Russo texted Shirilla about their volatile relationship and limited time.
- Shirilla faces life sentences for vehicular homicide and murder charges.
- Netflix documentary highlights Shirilla's POTS defense claim.

Dominic Russo, the boyfriend of Mackenzie Shirilla who died in a 2022 car crash, reportedly sent her a chilling text message four weeks prior to the incident. The message expressed concerns about their relationship and alluded to a limited time left on Earth. Shirilla, now 21, is serving two concurrent life sentences following the high-speed crash that killed Russo and a friend, Davion Flanagan.
Shirilla maintains that she blacked out due to postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition causing dizziness and fatigue upon standing. Prosecutors, however, presented the crash at 100 mph with no braking as evidence of a botched murder-suicide attempt. Her conviction includes multiple felony charges, including murder and vehicular homicide.
The Netflix documentary 'The Crash' features Shirilla speaking from behind bars, expressing remorse and reiterating her POTS diagnosis as the cause. She is eligible for parole in 2037. In the wake of Russo's death, Shirilla also reportedly asked his family to place photos in his grave and contacted his mother about considering hypnosis to recover memories.
