Former world champion boxer Liam Smith is facing a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent. The 38-year-old, previously the WBO light-middleweight titleholder, was arrested for an alleged assault on a concierge worker at The Blade tower block on September 13. The alleged victim, Laurent Nke, reportedly sustained facial injuries and required hospitalization.
During a hearing at Manchester Crown Court, the judge noted that CCTV footage captured the incident. The court was told the footage showed Smith delivering two strikes to the head of an individual lying on the floor, unable to stand, and pushing past others to continue the assault. Smith's court appearance was adjourned until November 28, when he is expected to enter pleas.
Liam Smith, nicknamed 'Beefy', was granted bail under the condition that he does not contact the alleged victim or enter Manchester, except for court or solicitor appointments. A provisional trial date has been scheduled for the week of March 15, 2028. Smith had recently withdrawn from a comeback fight due to a calf injury.
