Summary
- Nightclub owners ordered to pay interim relief to 25 victim families.
- Each family to receive Rs 20 lakh in ex-gratia compensation.
- Compensation payments must be made in instalments until February.
The Bombay High Court has mandated interim ex-gratia compensation for the families affected by the fatal fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in North Goa. Owners Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra are directed to pay Rs 20 lakh to each of the 25 victim families.
This court order, issued on Monday, ensures that the families receive financial assistance without prejudice to any future claims they may wish to pursue. The Luthra brothers are permitted to settle these payments in instalments, with specific deadlines set for November 15 and December, and the final payment due by February next year.
The fire, which occurred on December 6 last year, claimed the lives of 20 employees and five tourists, while also injuring approximately 50 individuals. The Luthra brothers, who had fled to Thailand post-incident, are currently facing criminal proceedings related to the tragedy. The High Court continues to oversee the case, focusing on relief and compensation for those affected.
