In Bhubaneswar, a concerning incident involving the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl has prompted a significant police manhunt. A primary suspect, who remains at large, has a history of crime with more than a dozen previous cases, including attempted murder and assault. He was reportedly released from Jharpada special jail just a week prior to the December 10th incident.
Investigators are actively pursuing five alleged perpetrators, two of whom have been apprehended. The survivor's male friend was reportedly assaulted before the girl was sexually assaulted by two individuals, with three others abetting the crime. The absconding suspect is known to have been recently released on bail in a separate group clash case, highlighting concerns about repeat offenses.
Both the State Commission for Women and the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights have initiated probes. Residents near the crime scene have criticized police for insufficient night patrolling, calling for exemplary punishment to deter future criminal activities in the area frequented by students.
