18 Feb
Summary
- Elderly woman lost gold worth Rs 3 lakh during morning walk.
- Jewellery store owner pepper-sprayed, robbed of Rs 6 lakh.
- Police suspect separate gangs behind the two daring incidents.

Two brazen robbery incidents have shaken Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, leaving residents concerned about their safety. The first incident occurred on Tuesday morning when septuagenarian Sakuntala Mohanty was targeted during her regular walk in Sailashree Vihar. Two masked individuals on a motorbike snatched her gold chain, valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh, leaving the 76-year-old woman distressed and feeling vulnerable.
Later that same day, another daring robbery took place in Kalinga Vihar. A man, disguised with a mask, entered a local jewellery store under the pretext of purchasing ornaments. As the store owner calculated the cost of items, the perpetrator suddenly sprayed pepper into the owner's eyes and fled with jewellery worth over Rs 6 lakh. CCTV footage captured the deceptive act and swift escape.
These twin incidents, occurring within hours of each other, have heightened safety concerns, particularly as the state assembly session is ongoing. Police have launched an investigation, analyzing CCTV footage from both locations. Senior officers indicated that the distinct modus operandi suggests the involvement of different criminal gangs, and efforts are underway to track down the culprits.
