8 Feb
Summary
- Conman impersonated doctor to defraud patients' families.
- Hospital staff allegedly leaked patient details for commission.
- Scammers used QR codes for immediate online payment demands.

A significant hospital fraud has been uncovered at Hamidia Hospital in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. A conman, identified as Jitendra Khagre, posed as a doctor to defraud families of critically ill patients. The scam, operating since January, has affected at least 10 families, with reported losses surpassing Rs 30,000 from just three police complaints.
Investigators revealed that the scheme relied on insider information, with hospital staff allegedly providing patient details, medical conditions, and contact numbers to Khagre for a 20% commission. Armed with this precise information, Khagre would contact families, falsely claiming danger and offering expedited tests or superior treatment, often demanding immediate payment via QR codes.
Exploiting the families' desperation, Khagre made convincing calls, as evidenced by an audio recording where he pressured a father for Rs 10,000 for an echocardiogram. Similar tactics were employed in other departments, including Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and Emergency Medicine, with victims losing thousands after QR code payments, only to have their numbers blocked.
