In Berkeley, a student was pursued into her apartment complex by an individual who scaled a locked gate on September 15th. Surveillance video captured the incident, showing the man entering the secured premises after the student. Police responded to the call but were delayed due to other high-priority emergencies.
Officers later identified the same individual on the following night. However, due to California law, a warrantless arrest for a misdemeanor not observed in their presence was not possible. Consequently, the case was forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for a charging decision.
As of Monday, prosecutors were still reviewing the case, and no charges had been filed. The student expressed shock that the suspect could allegedly chase her into a secure building and then be released after identification, calling for stronger legal protections.
