On September 13, 2025, two Bengaluru women named Usha and Varalakshmi fell victim to a brutal robbery. As they were returning from a Ganesh festival, they were accosted by two men on a motorcycle - Praveen and Yogananda. Wielding a machete, the men first threatened Usha and stole her 10-gram gold chain.
When Varalakshmi tried to resist, Yogananda viciously severed two of her fingers with a single blow of the machete before snatching her 45-gram gold chain. In total, the robbers made off with around Rs 7 lakh worth of jewelry.
After a complaint was filed, police launched a massive manhunt. Investigations revealed that Yogananda had a criminal history, including a previous murder case. He had gone into hiding in Puducherry, Mumbai, and Goa before returning to his hometown.
Nearly a month later, police finally arrested Yogananda from Maddur. They also recovered the 74 grams of stolen gold jewelry and the machete used in the attack. The second suspect, Praveen, remains at large as the investigation continues.
