In a tragic incident, a 40-year-old woman from Bengaluru was booked on murder charges on September 2, 2026, for allegedly drowning her three-month-old twin daughters. She then reportedly attempted suicide at their home in Vajarahalli.
The discovery was made by the woman's husband when he returned home and found a room locked from the inside. Upon opening the door, he found his wife, Umadevi, attempting suicide and their infant daughters dead. Doctors examining the babies suspected drowning as the cause of death.
Umadevi, who was rescued and received medical treatment, is suspected to have drowned the children before her suicide attempt. The couple had twins on May 5, 2026, after undergoing IVF treatment due to infertility. According to the complaint, Umadevi began exhibiting changes in behavior approximately one-and-a-half months after delivery, showing disinterest in the babies and suggesting they be sent to an ashram.
She was subsequently admitted for psychiatric treatment, where doctors indicated her behavior might be linked to postpartum depression and hormonal changes.
