18 Jan
Summary
- Three passengers were caught smuggling live exotic animals from Bangkok.
- Seized animals included monkeys, iguanas, squirrels, and sugar gliders.
- Several of the exotic animals were found dead during the seizure.

Customs authorities at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru have successfully thwarted an attempt to illegally import live exotic animals from Bangkok, Thailand. The operation, conducted on Friday, led to the interception of three passengers arriving on an IndiGo flight.
During a thorough baggage inspection, officials discovered a variety of live exotic animals, including squirrel monkeys, several types of iguanas, Abert's squirrels, Patagonian hares, and albino sugar gliders. Disturbingly, some of these animals were already deceased at the time of their discovery.
The individuals apprehended are suspected of being part of an international smuggling ring, as they lacked the necessary permits for importing such wildlife. Further legal actions are being initiated under the Customs Act and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, with surviving animals possibly facing deportation and dead animals undergoing proper disposal.
