The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police has taken over the investigation into the drowning of Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee. The 42-year-old actor reportedly drowned on March 29 near Talsari, close to the Odisha border, during a television project shoot. Initial reports suggest he entered the sea alone after filming concluded, and a wave swept him under.
The post-mortem examination concluded that Banerjee died from suffocation after being trapped underwater, with significant amounts of seawater and sand found in his lungs and oesophagus. The actor's family registered an unnatural death case, raising concerns echoed by the film fraternity regarding the circumstances and alleged contradictions in crew statements.
Concerns have also surfaced about potential procedural lapses, including allegations that the shooting might have proceeded without necessary local authority permissions. The CID's involvement aims to scrutinize these aspects and determine if negligence contributed to the tragic incident.
In response to the family's plea for a deeper inquiry, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the CID's takeover. He also highlighted plans to enhance coastal safety, including increasing the number of sea guards and reviewing their remuneration.
