A brutal, unprovoked knife attack in Belfast has left Stephen Ogilvie, 44, facing the possibility of complete blindness. The assault on June 8 in Kinnaird Avenue resulted in stab wounds to his face, neck, and back. Mr. Ogilvie lost his left eye and his family has stated he may also lose sight in his right eye.
He was in an induced coma for over a week following the attack. His parents shared an update on Wednesday, confirming he is out of the coma but still faces significant challenges. A GoFundMe fundraiser established to support his recovery has garnered £31,000.
The funds are intended to help Mr. Ogilvie acquire necessary equipment and support as he adjusts to life after the incident. The attack, which occurred near his home in Rathcoole, Newtownabbey, has prompted a significant community response, including financial aid and praise for those who intervened.
Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese migrant, is accused of attempted murder and possessing a knife in relation to the attack. He also faces charges for threatening to kill an NHS radiographer on the same day. Alodid was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 8.
