Police Chase Ends in Fatal Crash: IIO Clears Officers
22 Oct
Summary
- Police attempted to speak to a driver involved in an investigation.
- The driver fled, leading to a crash in a three-wheeled vehicle.
- B.C.'s IIO found no link between police actions and the death.

An investigation by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) has concluded that police conduct did not contribute to the death of a man involved in a crash last month near Vancouver's Canada Place. The incident occurred on September 11, when Vancouver Police officers attempted to speak with the man, who was believed to be involved in a police investigation.
The man drove away from the officers, subsequently crashing his Polaris Slingshot, a three-wheeled vehicle, a short distance from the initial encounter. The crash, which also involved a damaged SUV, resulted in the vehicle overturning. Emergency services responded, and the man was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The IIO, B.C.'s civilian agency for investigating police-related deaths and serious harm incidents, reviewed extensive evidence. This included video footage, police reports, radio transmissions, and medical documentation. The chief civilian director concluded that there was no connection between any police actions or inaction and the man's death.
