A 71-year-old man, Robert Green, has been handed a lifetime non-harassment order and two years of supervision for stalking BBC Scotland presenter Anne McAlpine over a four-year period. Green's persistent and alarming behaviour began in February 2021 with letters sent to the BBC headquarters, evolving into uninvited appearances at Anne's home in 2024.
The letters, signed with the same name, initially contained declarations of love and gifts, but their tone shifted when Green learned of Anne's engagement. He fixated on her TV appearances, believing she communicated with him through her clothing and mannerisms. His actions escalated to repeatedly ringing her doorbell in the early hours and appearing at her home, causing her to fear for her safety.
Anne McAlpine described the ordeal as intrusive, intimidating, and a significant invasion of privacy, impacting her sense of security and even her career choices. Following his arrest near her home, Green was found guilty of a course of conduct that caused Anne fear and alarm. The sheriff noted Green's behaviour was "sinister, unwelcomed and upsetting," imposing the sentence as a direct alternative to imprisonment.
