Rogue Tattooist Banned, Continues Work After Sepsis Death
5 Apr
Summary
- Unlicensed tattooist continued working despite being banned.
- His work was linked to a man's death from sepsis.
- He operated from squalid living room conditions.

Tony Learmount, a tattooist whose unlicensed work was linked to the death of Ben Larry from sepsis, continued to operate illegally. Learmount was banned after Mr. Larry died in May 2023 from sepsis following a leg tattoo. The inquest concluded the infection led to multiple organ failure. Learmount was fined £1,700 for running an unlicensed studio and branded a risk to human health.
Despite this, Learmount continued his illicit trade from his living room at a new address, resulting in another customer needing antibiotics for an infection. Middlesbrough Council officers documented squalid conditions, with tattoo equipment found in grubby drawers. Learmount received a suspended sentence after admitting to tattooing while banned and failing to register properly.
Mr. Larry's father expressed disgust, stating Learmount "just keeps getting away with it." Learmount, however, claimed Mr. Larry was a close friend and denied fault, citing the inherent risks of tattooing. He has faced complaints since 2013 and was previously stopped from trading in 2018. His recent conviction led to a suspended prison sentence, a fine, and forfeiture of his equipment.
