Swiss Tourist Jailed for Insulting Bali's Day of Silence

A court in Denpasar, Bali, has sentenced a 26-year-old Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, to one year in prison. The conviction stems from social media posts Zgraggen made during the Day of Silence, a sacred Balinese Hindu observance.

Zgraggen was found guilty of violating Indonesia's new criminal code. He posted messages on social media, including Instagram, that boasted about defying the restrictions of Nyepi, the Day of Silence. He described walking to a beach and called the tradition "crazy" with an expletive.

The Denpasar District Court found that Zgraggen posted the messages despite being informed of the restrictions by his villa's staff. Presiding judge Tjokorda Putra Budi Pastima stated that the defendant's actions offended the Balinese people, hurt their faith, and provoked public outrage.

Nyepi, the Day of Silence, typically occurs in March, during which the island observes strict silence and stays indoors. The airport shuts down, and the internet is switched off for the day. These restrictions apply to everyone, regardless of nationality or religion.

Zgraggen claimed during his trial that he did not intend to insult the holiday or its people, citing hunger and frustration for his actions. He expressed deep regret and apologized. While tourists have previously been detained for violating Nyepi rules, such cases typically concluded without prosecution.
