Summary
- A man allegedly used an axe to kill four family members.
- A dispute over ancestral property led to the brutal killings.
- The accused also critically injured his elder brother.

A brutal family massacre occurred in Basantpur Rudal village, Bahraich, where a 40-year-old man allegedly killed four relatives with an axe over a property dispute. The accused, Nirankar Verma, reportedly attacked his father first during an argument about ancestral land division. When other family members intervened, he extended the attack, killing his mother, sister, and grandmother.
His elder brother, Gurudev Verma, was also critically injured while attempting to stop the assault and is currently receiving hospital treatment. A 10-year-old nephew, the sole eyewitness, hid and watched the horrific events unfold. Police have taken the child into protective custody.
Following the murders, the accused reportedly attempted suicide and was apprehended by villagers and subsequently arrested by police. He is undergoing medical treatment in Lucknow due to his severe condition.
Investigators believe the killings stem from a multi-year dispute over 18 bighas of agricultural land. The accused allegedly felt cheated out of his rightful share of proceeds from land sales. Forensic teams recovered the blood-stained axe and a brick used in the attack. An FIR has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
