A heartbreaking incident in Elizabeth Downs has led to the death of a nine-month-old boy, Kohen. He was discovered unresponsive inside a minivan parked at a residence on Midlow Road. Emergency services were called to the scene on Wednesday evening following reports of the infant being found.
A neighbour, Ebony Baxter, who is trained in infant CPR, rushed to assist after hearing the father's cries for help. She attempted to revive Kohen on the footpath, describing the harrowing experience and her wish to have done more. Paramedics also provided assistance, and for a brief period, a weak pulse was detected.
Despite these efforts, Kohen could not be saved. His mother, Crystal Manneken, 31, was subsequently charged with criminal neglect. She was granted bail and is scheduled to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates' Court on April 14. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Kohen's death are ongoing, with a report being prepared for the coroner.
The death has deeply shaken the Elizabeth Downs community. The Department for Child Protection has stated they are unable to comment on the matter due to the ongoing police investigation, calling the death a tragedy for all who knew him. Former South Australian Director of Public Prosecutions, Stephen Pallaras, noted that the event raises serious questions.
