A family is mourning the loss of Alexander LaMorie, a 25-year-old autistic man who was fatally shot by Howard County police. The incident occurred early Sunday morning after LaMorie called 911 requesting a wellness check.
Police reported that upon arriving at his apartment complex, LaMorie was encountered in the parking lot holding a knife. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, he allegedly refused, leading three officers to discharge their firearms.
LaMorie was a resident of Patuxent Commons, a housing project developed by the Autism Society of Maryland for adults with disabilities and seniors. His family described him as a kind and enthusiastic individual who actively shared his experiences with autism and grief online.
The Maryland Attorney General's office is investigating the shooting. Authorities have stated that body-worn camera footage of the incident exists and will be released within 20 business days.
