Mountaineer's Trial: "Endlessly Sorry" for Frozen Girlfriend
19 Feb
Summary
- Austrian mountaineer faces gross negligent manslaughter charge.
- Girlfriend died of hypothermia near Großglockner summit.
- Case could set international standards for mountain sports liability.

An Austrian mountaineer, identified as Thomas P, is facing trial in Innsbruck for gross negligent manslaughter following the death of his girlfriend, Kerstin G, from hypothermia on January 19, 2025, near the summit of Großglockner. Thomas P expressed profound remorse but pleaded not guilty, asserting he loved Kerstin and did not wish her harm.
The prosecution contends that Thomas P, the more experienced climber, bore responsibility for their safety. They allege that insufficient planning, inadequate clothing and equipment, and a failure to turn back despite severe weather conditions—including winds up to 74 kmph—led to Kerstin G's fatal disorientation about 50 meters from the peak.
Thomas P maintained that Kerstin G was an experienced climber and that they planned the tour together. He claimed adverse conditions, with wind chills dropping to -20C, were unpredictable. He explained he descended to seek help after securing Kerstin, who, he stated, later urged him to save himself.
Kerstin G's parents submitted a letter to the court disputing the perception of their daughter as a victim and stating they could not blame her boyfriend. However, a message from Kerstin G weeks prior indicated her lack of experience in winter tours, a point raised by the prosecution.
